Cool Weather Clues

October represents a change of season, and for most of us, it means cooler temperatures. For the avid golfer, cold weather is not something to fear but a challenge to embrace. The following is a list of helpful tips that cannot be ignored for peak performance as the temperature drops:

Golf Balls – As the temperature drops below 70°, the golf ball begins to lose compression. The ball will actually feel harder and travel a shorter distance. Another benchmark is at 55°, when the golf ball loses even more of its compression, and therefore, loses even more distance. The solution is simple; play with 80 compression golf balls in the fall. There is an easy way to find the compression on the golf ball. Simply look at the color of the number on the ball. If the number is written in black, it is a 100 compression ball and only good for golfers with 110 mph driver club head speed in the summer time. If it is written in red, the ball is a 90 compression ball which most of us play six months of the year or longer. 80 compression balls have the number written in jade, royal blue or burgundy, depending on the manufacturer, and they make a huge difference for spin, touch, and distance.

Club selection – This might sound silly, but it is very logical–use one club more. If your standard 150 yard club is a 6 iron, hit a 5 iron in cooler weather. The main caveat for this fix is that most people do not hit their longer clubs as well as their shorter ones. The solution to that would be to practice more on your short game! You should not expect to hit the ball further or better in cold weather, but you can still score well if you put your time in with the wedges and putter.

Clothing – You have to wear more layers and heavier clothing as the temperature drops to keep the body warm. It is a fact that heat escapes the body fastest through the head. Therefore, break out the toboggans, stocking caps, or whatever you call your winter hat where you reside. Also, the closer your clothes are to the body, the warmer the body remains. If you do not own any Under Armour, it might be a good investment. As you continue to layer the garments, your range of motion dissipates and results in a loss of power.

In conclusion, the cool weather tips are to change golf balls, club selection, and the clothes you wear to play golf. Enjoy the change of season with its beautiful colors, and keep swinging despite the falling temps!
