CROMWELL, Conn. – After Merion and last week’s U.S. Open anything would have seemed like a vacation, particularly to Hunter Mahan, who should consider buying a house adjacent the TPC River Highlands layout following another stellar round there on Thursday.
Mahan opened with an 8-under 62 at the Travelers Championship, marking the 27th time in 39 rounds he has posted a score at or below par.
“Everything seemed easier,” Mahan’s caddie, John Wood, said when asked to compare Merion to this week’s stop.
Mahan took the early lead thanks to an opening nine of 30 and quickly dismissed the notion that he could suffer a post-Open letdown after tying for fourth place at Merion.
“I don’t see any negative about playing in the last group (on Sunday),” said Mahan, who also opened with a 62 in 2007 when he won the Travelers. “I took all positives from last week.”
Mahan was careful to pace himself after last week’s championship. He and his wife – Kandi, who is due with the couple’s first child in eight weeks – spent Monday touring around Philadelphia and made the drive north to the Travelers on Tuesday. – By Rex Hoggard
