Walter Hagen was a dandy! He would sometimes show up for a golf tournament dressed in his evening clothes presumably coming from an all-night party to play golf.  Some would have looked on his behavior as being a clown, but for Hagen it was all calculated. Hagen is said to have been the first millionaire sportsman in this country, which is quite an accomplishment when you consider that he was competing for attention with the likes of Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey.

Today, few modern golfers remember Hagan or his accomplishments, however it might come as a surprise that nearly 80 years after his last win, Hagen still ranks third behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods with 11 major championships including winning the PGA Championship a record five times, a distinction that he shares today with Jack Nicklaus.

Hagen was born in 1892 in Rochester New York, like Ben Hogan the son of a blacksmith who learned the game of golf while caddying to help support his family. Hagen live to see man walk on the moon passing away at the age of 76 in 1969. Although today, his impact of the game of golf can still be felt. Hagen worked with the golf club designers at Wilson to develop a line of clubs named after him that were marketed for decades and you can go to Dick’s Sporting Goods and by Walter Hagen golf apparel today.

If you want to make an impression in the game of golf, see the pros at Classic Swing Golf School, you may not make a million bucks playing the game as Hagen did, but you might feel like a million after spending some time with them! By Dan Defreest
