Man uses golf club to fight off Florida gator
NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK/CNN) – It was a close call for a man who encountered an alligator on a Florida golf course, but thanks to his lucky putter, he’s alive to tell the story.
Tony Aarts said he was approaching the fourth hole, when he heard a splash in the water. Turns out it was a giant gator.
“As soon as I heard that splash, I knew it was an alligator, and he got me,” Aarts told WINK News.
He said the gator grabbed him by the ankle and he ended up in the water hazard.
“I remember having a club in my hand, and as soon as he had me in the water up to my waist, I started hitting him over the head,” he said.
Not intimidated by its size or claws, Aarts put up a fight and the gator wasn’t going to give up easy too.
“So, I started hitting him in the eye socket, I hit him 3 times and he let go of my foot,” said Aarts. “So I crawled back and by that time they guys… they were there.”
He said if it weren’t for his Cleveland putter, he might not be here today.
“I guess a golfer should always keep a club in his hand,” said Aarts.
