CHARLOTTE, N.C. – One day before the opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship, the damaged greens at Quail Hollow remain one of the hot topics at the tournament.
“You can't lie about it, the greens are shaky,” Rickie Fowler said. “But I feel like come tournament time, with the way they'll be able to possibly cut and roll the greens, you're still going to be able to make putts. There is still a hole out there. So the way I'm going into it, someone's going to have to make putts this week.”
Many of the putting surfaces on the course are marked with patchy brown spots and some have shown speeds inconsistent from the remainder of the course.
“I think it’s unfortunate about the greens, but everybody’s got to putt on the same surface,” Joe Ogilvie maintained. “There’s no use in saying the greens are bad. Everybody around Quail Hollow, from the tournament director to members to Johnny Harris, knows they’re not what they’re supposed to be and what they expect.”
“They’re rough. If it gets any rain, that’s going to make it even worse,” said Gary Woodland, who acknowledged that he knows rain is in the forecast. “The good news is, we’ve all got to play the same course and that money and those FedEx Cup points still spend the same.”
“Someone's going to win the golf tournament,” Fowler added. “They're still giving out a trophy and a jacket at the end of Sunday.”
Perhaps the most accurate assessment came from Ogilvie.
“They’ll be inconsistent, but they’ll be fine. If you hit a good putt, it will go in. If you hit a bad putt, it might go in,” he said. “Someone hitting it really well and chipping it really well probably has a great chance to win.” – The Golf Channel
