CONWAY, S.C. (WMBF) – The entire Coastal Carolina Athletic department has plenty to be proud of in 2020.

The Chanticleer football team is undefeated and ranked No. 15 in the country, the volleyball team is unbeaten with a No. 12 national ranking, the men’s soccer team is ranked fifth in the nation and just won yet another Sun Belt title, and CCU graduate Dustin Johnson just won the most prestigious event in golf.

The No. 1 golfer in the world shot a Masters record 20 under par to win his first Green Jacket. CCU head men’s golf coach Jim Garren shared his thoughts on watching the impressive performance by the former Chant over the weekend.

“At first you don’t think about it because he played at Coastal and I’m coaching this program now, you just love it for a guy like that,” Garren said. “He’s had some heartbreak but he’s been the best player in the world for a while now. I’m super happy for the guy. I think everybody that knows Dustin understands how much he does love the game and how much he works. But to see it hourly, I think that was great for our game and great for everybody to see for him.”

Garren also see’s Johnson’s victory as something that will bring even more attention to his program moving forward.

“He’s the best player in the world, there’s literally nothing he could do that’s bigger than that for us,” added Garren. “He’s the best player in the world, he has his foundation, and he has his golf school. He does everything for the game and it’s like Tiger Woods at Stanford, it really is. Tiger is probably the biggest name ever in the game but Dustin is the next one in line.”
